Big Graph Eastern State Penitentiary 1

CLIENT: Eastern State Penitentiary
Philadelphia, PA

DESCRIPTION:

Eastern State Penitentiary is a historic site located in the heart of Philadelphia. This historic prison was closed in 1971, and now functions as an interpretive space exploring its history as well as encouraging public dialogue about the criminal justice system through preservation, interpretive exhibits, and artist installations. After working with Eastern State on several previous projects, USA was recently commissioned to provide design development, fabrication and installation of a 16-foot tall outdoor bar graph showing the growth of incarceration rates in the United States by decade since 1900.

USA worked with Eastern State through design development to specify and test materials that would provide the most compelling visual experience and also withstand year-round outdoor conditions. The Big Graph is made of powder-coated plate-steel, water jet cut numbering for each decade, and engraved text. The 3,500 pound structure is supported on a steel framework embedded in concrete footings.
